1. Books! I love incorporating books into my therapy sessions. They’re engaging and an easy way to target multiple objectives simultaneously. You can also stretch the same book out over a period of weeks, which makes lesson planning (and your life) so much easier. Here are a few beginning of the year books that our students enjoy:
- If You Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff
- Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes
- We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins
- Amelia Bedelia’s First Day of School by Herman Parish
With my younger students and my life skills students, I like to make an All About Me book. It’s an easy way to not only get to know your students and what they did over their summer breaks but also targets language and fine motor goals. It’s a great activity that you can also spread out over 2-3 weeks. Have you noticed the pattern? I like activities that can be spread out over multiple weeks!
Need help with book ideas? I’ve got you covered! Save your TIME and your SANITY and check out the books I’ve made for you below.
2. BINGO! Who doesn’t love a good round of bingo?
With my older students, we’re going to start out with Back-to-School bingo with a twist. To play, have one student at a time draw a picture card from the bag/container. Anyone who did that activity over the summer will cover that picture on his/her bingo board. You can use the pictures cards to have students practice articulation skills, practice using complete sentences, retell summer activities, engage in conversations with other peers about their summer activities, and more! This is the perfect “get to know you” and rapport building activity for your ENTIRE caseload.
3. Word Scrambles! Looking for an engaging way to work on writing, describing, and drawing? Then word scrambles are perfect for you!
