Do you struggle finding the time and materials you need when asked for a home program or materials for teachers to use to support students articulation? I know I do. It never fails that I get asked for home practice or classroom suggestions during my busiest weeks. Often I feel like those support materials get pushed further and further down my to-do list because I’m lacking in time to gather materials, make copies, and send home. As busy therapists, we need something that’s not only effective and comprehensive, but also offering variety and most importantly ready-to-go. That’s why I’ve developed a series of articulation home programs!
Uses
- additional home practice,
- for classroom practice as part of “response to intervention”,
- as a summer home program,
- for additional practice for students that have been dismissed from speech therapy services,
- send the entire packet home, parts of the packet or share one page at time
How to use as intervention support
- Discuss with the teacher how to prompt specific sounds
- Have to the teacher practice with the student while you (the therapist) provide suggestions
- Discuss an amount of time you would like the teacher to practice with the student per week
- Show the teacher how to use the data sheet included to track the student’s progress
- Establish an amount of time you would like the teacher to provide practice opportunities, prompts and models for the student
- Give the appropriate visual supports, picture cards, and/or word lists for the teacher to use with the student
- Check in with the teacher weekly to see how it’s going and to answer any questions
Home Programs or Summer Homework
This program can be used as additional home practice for students currently in speech therapy or in the referral/RTI process, as a summer home program, or for additional practice for students that have been dismissed from speech therapy services. Be sure to review with the parent (or teacher) how to correctly prompt the child on saying the target sound. I like to do this in person or over the phone, if possible. I find sharing videos demonstrating how to correctly produce the target sound to be helpful as well. Make sure you include any additional comments or notes to the parents such as specific prompts you use during therapy or things you feel are important for the parent to know. Include all or part of the program at your discretion.
